Doesn't this completely defeat the point of those copies being so called "digital backups"? If you were selling the disks, then it would be different, because you would be selling the ownership of the game, but what is the point of a backup that you have to delete if you get rid of the original? |
When you buy a Movie, TV show, Music Record or video game, you are buying the "license" for that which is tied to the physical media you purchased... It doesn't actually matter what condition the original media is in either, as long as you own it.
I can thus legally make a backup of my original content, but I would have to remove it if I sold the physical/license copy.
And this even flows onto emulation, it's perfectly legal for me to emulate games I own.
And with digital distribution... If hypothetically, Steam even decided to implode, I still retain the "license" for all my purchases, so I can legally "obtain" copies from elsewhere.
It's part of Australian consumer law... So it will vary in other nations like the USA/Europe etc'.
