Doesn't this completely defeat the point of those copies being so called "digital backups"? If you were selling the disks, then it would be different, because you would be selling the ownership of the game, but what is the point of a backup that you have to delete if you get rid of the original?

Even if the physical copy stops working it would be considered an owned/licensed product. You could still use the digital copy even with a defunct disc, in theory.
