Serious Sam: The First Encounter was absolutely groundbreaking when it released. Keep in mind that the game was originally actually made to promote and showcase the game engine called Serious Engine since they couldn't create their original vision (a shooter with strong storytelling; they lacked the manpower to do so), but afaik nobody licensed the engine despite it being very powerful yet light on ressources for it's time.
