I have never heard that about teachers and i am skeptical.  Do you have any sources for that?  Growing up in the USA i have always felt teachers were underpaid.  I always loop back to pro-athlete vs teachers wages and feel like we have things horribly bass-akwards when we pay entertainers so much better than those teachers helping shape our countries future.

Most teachers I know are grossly underpaid and make less than I do. On the other hand, the highest paid public employees in almost every state except maybe a few northeastern states with Ivy League schools are almost always the head football coach of those states’ flagship universities. In Oklahoma, where teachers’ pay is near the bottom while the people still scream that they’re overpaid, the head coaches at OU and OSU are paid seven or eight figure Wall Street salaries.

Almost the very definition of "a labor of love" since public school teachers sure as hell aren't in it for the money.
