Yeah the rule of thumb when it comes to console transitions: The more succesful the transition, the quicker the previous system declines. Unsuccesful transitions like PS2-PS3 and Wii-Wii U meant that the previous console could rack up 7M or more sales after the new console hit the market, while succesful transitions like Switch-Switch 2 means a pretty quick death for the previous system. (And the Switch 2 being fully backwards compatible means that sales are declining even faster, given that the Switch 2 is a true successor model to the Switch, unlike say Switch was to 3DS).
At least Switch should have enough juice to get over DS sales to become the second best selling console ever
