Gotta give it to Killzone 2.

It evoked the feeling of a hostile planet and the terrifying brutality of war brilliantly, and its audiovisual presentation was so ahead of its time that it still holds up today 16 years and two generations later.

Honourable mentions to Killzone 3, Jazz Jackrabbit, and the Overlord games which were excellent too.
