Unfortunately I have zero belief that Russians will ever turn against Putin.

And if they do, it will be because they think Putin isn't killing Ukraine quick enough.

Actually, there's quite some discontent to Putin, but for a very different reason that the war actually amplifies: Immigrants.

Putin has pretty much an open-door immigration plan in place for at least a decade to bolster the population numbers of Russia. Navalny, while also much more democratically inclined than Putin, actually had the same stance as the nationalists in this regard to shut down the borders and make Russia Russian again. And it's actually this stance that gave him most potential voters, not his plans for a more democratic Russia, though that also attracted some potential voters of course.

Due to the war, Russians are dying and more and more foreigners are hired to work their factories as Russia has full employment. While the population is very much fully distracted from this issue right now with the war in Ukraine, it could become a fatal problem for Putin the moment the war ends, hence yet another reason to stall on top of the economic reasons I mentioned before. But stalling also just makes the issue going worse down the line so again, there's no easy way out of this for Putin.
