When I played it the first time, I used the whistles.

My multiple playthroughs on NES , SNES and GBA versions I did every level.

The first time you play SMB3 on the NES all the way through without using the whistles in one sitting is the first time you realize its greatness. It's stunning. Absolutely stunning.
