People say that Nintendo doesn't specifically care whether the Switch 1 beats the PS2, but considering how the final tally is clearly going to be very close, I'd honestly say that maybe they kind of do care. Could be good marketing for the Switch 2 that they could sell it as the successor to the best selling game system of all time (and that it is backwards compatible with said system).

Realistically, the Switch should reach 161m in order to settle this debate, so how hard could it be for them to produce 9m more within the next 3 years or so. Obviously, they are going to produce a lot of Switch 2s as well, but they did produce over 28m Switch 1s in the 2020/2021 initial Covid FY. They probably still sell less hardware than that combined between both Switch 1 & 2 for the next few years.
