I wouldn't call him useless - but only for Russia.

Having downed support for Ukraine helped Russia a lot to keep up momentum in their offensive against Pokrovsk and their counterattacks against the Ukrainian salient within Russia.

Apart from being besties with Putin and believing pretty much everything the latter is telling him, Trump is probably firmly believing that Russia still has a giant army and stocks of armored vehicles like the Soviet Union did in the 80's (be it from growing to prominence during that time or because Putin tells him he does) and thus also firmly believes he's doing Ukraine a solid when he offers peace along the current front line, and doesn't give any guarantees to Ukraine because he fears even just mentioning them would push Russia into attacking Europe - and we already saw how much they don't like "bailing out" Europe...
