I think it will happen around the end of this year (I'm expecting ~157m shipped by Dec 31st).

With 157M shipped, the sold units will be around 156M, since the difference between shipped and sold is gonna shrink. And by the way I am not sure if it has been 3M ever. Maybe around 2020 and 2021 when the Switch was selling at it's peak, but it was around 2M for the last few years. With the sales slowing, it will probably be 1M by end of the year, so 157M shipped by then would mean 156M sold at most. If 154M will be the sold units by then, then the shipments would be 155M at most by that point.

If that's the case then I guess I predict Switch outselling the DS sooner, since my shipment prediction remains the same:  157m shipped by December 31st, 2025.  This is why I prefer shipment data for my predictions since they are based on official data.  And a shipped unit will become a sold unit eventually.  For example, I believe Switch will out-ship the PS2 by the end of 2026 but I couldn't pin-point exactly when it will be at 160m sold-through.
