It made sense going from Wii U to Switch, but now it just seems greedy. Everybody already got those games on the Switch, and S2 is backwards compatible, so what's the point? The new content can be DLC, why make us buy the same game again? This is what happens when you let them have a best selling console of all time. It happened with Sony and PS2, and now Nintendo with Switch. |
In the case of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom... Nintendo did not add any new content, they just changed a few triggers in a text file to run it at a higher resolution with Anisotropic Filtering and higher framerates.

To be fair... I refuse to pay for subscriptions, I don't like losing access to my content if I cancel my subscription.

I will probably buy them all and make a clean break between Switch and Switch 2.

Profits.
They have shareholders that they need to appease... And considering they sold 60+ million copies of Mario Kart 8, how do you think they will make more profit on it's successor? They are unlikely to outsell those numbers, so they need to make more money off each individual customer instead.
So no... They didn't need to go beyond $60, they would have been profitable at that level... But for the sake of profits for the shareholders and other bean counters... They had to.

And of course I'll download the free upgrades for Super Mario Odyssey, Zelda EoW, Captain Toad etc. That should be more than enough to play for 2025, especially with my huge backlog on other systems. |
I'll be buying the Switch 2 physical copies and keep my Switch 1 and Switch 2 libraries separate.
I will be reducing the number of purchases though to must-have first party exclusives and play other games on other devices.

Padib. We have had this discussions so many times, you need to stop lying.
Steam Deck, Rog Ally and more exist.

That games for Switch in 2025, are for the most part are $60. is pretty amazing. PS and XB games already made the jump to $70., yet people are losing their minds that Nintendo will be raising prices on their now much higher performance games. Higher development time costs, higher payroll costs etc etc etc. Let's say you take a family of two or four out to a movie and buy popcorn and drinks, or go out to dinner. What does that 2 hours of entertainment cost? Now purchase a game that can provide 20+ (maybe 100+) hours of entertainment for only $70 or even $80? Why is this even worth discussing? One could argue about the cost for games like BoTW enhanced...but if you are a first time buyer, I don't see the problem when you have the higher performance of an already great game that will provide that many hours of entertainment. If you have already played it, no-one is forcing you to purchase it again. For MKW, if your that upset about $80, Just buy the bundle and it's only $50. Problem solved If we were already comfortable paying $70. and now a game is $80. just skip the dbl syrup caramel latte mocha-espressochino for 2 days and you'll be just fine. |
Back in the 80's and 90's Australia had Tariffs on most imported goods... And as a result the cheapest Super Nintendo games were often around $76 which would be $170 today adjusted for inflation.
Something like Mortal Kombat would be around $130 which would be $290 today.
Back then though, we actually got a mostly bug-free and complete game though.
Today? Most games are unplayable on release day, need tons of updates and end up being "completed" via DLC at a later date for another fee.
Also... Fuck Tariffs.
We were behind the world by 20 years in adopting colour TV's because of Tariffs prioritizing inferior local manufacturing over superior and cheaper overseas alternatives.
People have short memories on how crap tariffs were for us, the consumer.
