The Metroid Prime 4 trailer did seem off. It felt like they were holding back. At least I hope they were holding back, because I didn’t see a lot that wowed me. If I didn’t trust the pedigree of the Metroid franchise and of Retro, I would be a little worried.

Nintendo has been holding things back on a regular basis since over a decade by now. Early trailers give a glimpse of basic gameplay features, then there are usually multiple additional trailers once a game gets closer to launch.

If you keep the development history of Metroid Prime 4 in mind, then it's also not surprising that MP4 will be merely a Metroid Prime with a new gameplay gimmick instead of a reinvention. And once you factor in that you yourself are getting older, it's also not surprising when the fourth entry in a series that sticks to its guns doesn't wow you anymore.

That’s a fair point. And I’m sure Metroid Prime 4 will get a deep dive at some point.

But this was the first big gameplay reveal — the first chance to really sell the game. And a lot of time was spent on opening doors. It’s just not a sexy mechanic.

The psychic ability to control Samus’ beam attack is super cool, but the majority of the trailer left me a bit cool. Honestly, if the video didn’t have Samus and the Metroid name, I wouldn’t be very excited for it — and this is coming from someone who loves the original trilogy and wants more of the same.

Prime 4 remains one of my most anticipated titles, because, again, I trust Retro and Nintendo, but this trailer didn’t do the game any favors.
