Actress Susan Sarandon speaks at New York event for Mahmoud Khalil
At an event held in solidarity with detained student and pro-Palestine activist Mahmoud Khalil in New York on Saturday, American actress Susan Sarandon gave a speech in solidarity with Gaza.
In it, Sarandon criticised those who sought to separate themselves from the Palestinian cause, arguing the war in Gaza is closely tied to America's own political developments under the Trump administration, particularly the threats to university students involved in pro-Palestine activism.
The solidarity event was attended by high-profile figures such as Alana Hadid and the American rapper Macklemore.
How Trump Is Creating a New International ‘Mafia Code'
“It's kind of a mafia polar world that is shaping up,”
In this new episode of ‘Unshocked’, Naomi Klein and Mehdi Hasan discuss Trump’s recent assaults on US allies Canada and Ukraine, his growing allyship with Putin, and how Trump’s actions reflect the breakdown of international order, especially since Israel’s war on Gaza.
Mehdi explains, “The US and the UK… have allowed Israel basically to burn down the Geneva Conventions, international humanitarian law as we know it. The response to that can't just be, ‘Well, okay, everyone gets to do that now.’
Watch the entire video to see Naomi and Mehdi discuss the limits of the international humanitarian order which was “rigged from the start to provide a veto to major powers”, and Trump’s trade war with Canada and his repeated calls to annex Naomi’s home country.
Fmr UN Official Says Yemen’s Red Sea Blockade Follows International Law to Stop Genocide
Craig Mokhiber, a human rights lawyer, joins the show to discuss the US’s airstrikes on Yemen. Trump’s bombardment follows Yemen’s Ansar Allah movement's resumption of its blockade of Israel-bound ships in the Red Sea – a solidarity action for Gaza after Israel choked off all aid. Mokhiber explains how according to international law, all nations are expected to cut ties with the Israeli occupation and act to prevent genocide– yet the US is bombing Yemen for doing precisely that.
