The games on handhelds aren't spin offs they're actually mainline installments that is incorrect if you think LA, PH, ST, MC and Oracles are spin offs or even ports and it's contradicts the claim that the fanbase is on console when they sold comparable units and in some cases more. With MH the portable and home console games had a different approach up to Tri where console MH was actually the mainline game that set the theme as each game would get a portable counterpart that followed the theme this changed with MHF3 which to date is still the only stand alone MH game with it's own theme rather than following on from Tri ,which itself got an enhanced 3DS and WiiU version later on as a result we got MH4 and 4U on 3DS making it the first time a console installment was skipped. Also MH had had a PC game in Frontier which also had a 360 version curiously.
Japan as a single country contributes as much to gaming as regions that are continents in fact if you broke down sales to countries it would beat out every country want an example look at the drop off in sales of a franchises like FF since it stopped appealing to the region compared to when it did this is why MH had strong sales off the region to try and dismiss it as a region is being clumsy in an argument especially when it provides unit sales on 35m for platforms like Switch, ironically for MH it's ability to carry the PSP and cause huge sales spikes for 3DS highlight it a strong system seller off starting from Freedom, the PSP version of the first game.
Zelda fluctuated because as a concept dungeon crawling has limited appeal that's why only three games prior to BOTW beat the 4m average these three had non series factors at play, LOZ is the og of the genre heading a new era in gaming, OOT had a perfect jump to 3d with its technical scope and TP helped usher in the addition of motion control it's not really to do with the console's sales as looking at the userbases of all Nintendo's platforms the sales are pretty consistent these three games just had more to them than just being Zelda. BOTW and TOTK is where sustained growth has happened because the games have changed significantly from what was conventional in the series they're more closer to games like GTA than the older Zelda games this is reflected in the fact that even if TOTK doesn't outsell BOTW it has still sold well above the series average.
