Yes, the channels suck compared to the other consoles' interfaces, but it is easier to use for new gamers and better informs them about the online capabilities of Wii. If the Shop wasn't so friendly, for example, the sales would be cut dramatically, unlike the other consoles with technically informed demographics. The rest of us: a) have a PC for all of our multimedia and cool interface needs and b) can put up with it and will still buy Nintendo products.
