The_Liquid_Laser said: Well, I'm glad this trailer finally dropped, and we have a date for the actual presentation. However, it is kind of a meh trailer. They just showed off hardware and teased one game. Do you remember the equivalent trailer for Switch 1? It blew me away. They showed off hardware while teasing several games and the trailer was exciting. Here watch it again: (video) Also remember that the idea of hybrid console, the joycons, the fact it plays with different kinds of controllers, etc..., these were all new concepts at the time. There was so much new stuff in this trailer that a person had to watch it several times just to wrap their head around it. This Switch 2 trailer was definitely not that. This trailer we got today was ok, but really Nintendo should have wanted their first impression to be exciting and not just ok. |
It's yet another case of people setting the wrong expectations for themselves. Ever since Furukawa's announcement regarding Nintendo having an announcement for Switch's successor this fiscal year while simultaneously confirming that the successor won't launch this fiscal year, it should have been clear that said upcoming announcement would be on the low-key side. But just like it has happened so often with Nintendo Directs, people have the wildest dreams of what they are going to get and then come away disappointed when the actual Direct was just good.
The excitement that can be derived from this trailer is that the Switch era of an avalanche of good games to play won't come to an end during this decade and can potentially last until the mid-2030s before we have to worry about Nintendo's good run hitting a wall again.
The excitement you remember from the equivalent Switch 1 trailer is a very personal one, because the general tone of the reception was very different. The gaming community as a whole didn't waste a second to declare doom for Nintendo because Switch clearly wasn't a console that the AAA third party publishers wanted. Nintendo fans specifically were cautious too after having just lived through the Wii U disaster.
But now for Switch 2, what are the reactions? I don't see anybody betting against the success of the system. People who hate Nintendo struggle to come up with anything negative to say, so we'll get to read about how some people don't like the logo. Or the next instance of people recognizing the diminishing returns of evolving graphics; this one doesn't surprise me, because the PS5 reveal couldn't escape such criticism either and screenshots were analyzed with spyglasses to assure others that there are notable improvements.
Switch 2 happens to be exactly what the rumors back in 2023 already suggested: A better Switch. Nothing more, nothing less. The next pressing question after the hardware has been confirmed is how the software lineup will look like. This will be answered in early April, but there's a good reason to be optimistic about it, because Nintendo was not only in the position to take their time to get it right due to Switch's success, they did indeed take the time instead of rushing out a successor. So there is a good chance that Switch 2 can follow in Switch 1's footsteps of having a very strong first year in terms of first party software.
Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV will outsell Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was wrong.
