Watchmen is indeed a legendary work. I'm nervous as hell about the movie; I don't think they can pull it off.
From Hell was published by Kitchen Sink Press, wasn't it? I'm pretty sure it's never been a DC publication, in any case. This has no effect on your argument, however.
Alan Moore and Frank Miller are not the be-all, end-all of DC either. As mentioned previously, Garth Ennis, Warren Ellis and Neil Gaiman have also produced some of their best works for the Vertigo imprint.
EDIT: Superman III was ass-terrible, by the way.
