I guess being Australian we don't really have attics or basements, we just run with a larger floor plan or have a larger garage if we need more space.
Part of the issue with attics is our extreme heat, the radiant sun just cooks the ceiling space... Not fun crawling around in the ceiling space chasing fire in thermal insulation during the peak of summer where temperatures could be above 70'C/158'F.

It's still bizarre, why not just a full size door if the "storage" space potentially goes up to the ceiling?

Actually there's two levels of the "Attic".

The 2nd floor of the house has the four small doors which lead to four small storage areas in a attic like area, doesnt lead to the ceiling at all - its a almost medium sized room (a little less than a bedroom) but there's only a small walkable space in the storage area, the rest is just the beams within the house - we were told we could get someone to actually create a room in each one if we want but by default its a small storage area purpose.

I'm planning to get one room built in the future but likely not anytime soon...2024's had so many other costs that I had to delay my plan to build a room.

The actual attic (where the AC tank/filter and Water tank is located and up to the ceiling) is actually above the 2nd floor of the house like a usual attic - there's a staircase that comes out when we pull down the door.
