Guess that's why I couldn't play the original after I played PM2 and found it to be my all-time black horse in videogaming.

They optmialised everything in the sequel, so the rough parts of the game really stand out.

I'll try it again if it comes to DS though.

I played them both when they came out. And I couldn't go back to the first after the second. The spectator system in particular was a great addition in the second.

Yes, I agree, but I'm saying the N64 was a better game in terms of innovation and technical excellence for the hardware platform. Just like SMW and SMB.
