Agreed, as a Nintendo fan I don't understand the people who are upset with this.
I haven't played Astrobot, but it looks like a charming game. Its creators clearly love Mario and list that series as a big influence, and its not like Astrobot beat a mainline Mario title to take the prize. I guess some people are bitter about the newer series having an award while Mario doesn't, but you've gotta consider the competition each game is up against during the year they release.
