Aside from Nintendo keeping well-known IPs fresh with new ideas, what new ideas has Sony or MS done this generation? |
Yeah Nintendo made new IP just like they do every single gen, so I really don't get what OP is trying to say. Only thing I can think is that maybe OP is only thinking of major mega selling games that become big new franchises (ie WiiU had Splatoon, Wii had Wii Sports, GC had Animal Crossing).
And while Switch had Ring Fit selling over 15 million, it's unlikely to become a new franchise since I'm guessing next gen Nintendo is gonna come out with another new fitness peripheral, though you never know, they stuck with Wii Balance Board so maybe they'll stick with the Ring next gen. Anyway OP is probably not thinking about a fitness games cuz usually those are viewed as like a separate thing from regular games. OP is probably talking about a new character driven series. It's true Switch didn't have a big new character-driven franchise this gen, but Nintendo did make a bunch of new IP for Switch and their fitness game sold huge numbers.
So it seems really odd to say Switch didn't focus on new IP. Nintendo put out a ton of new games on Switch, numerous of which were new IP. There was just nothing from this gen where it's obvious the game is going to be the first in an ongoing series each gen.
ARMS and Astral Chain might continue onward, even though they are both fairly niche games compared to Nintendo big sellers. Personally I'd much rather see a new Punchout game with motion controls next gen than a new ARMS game. And while I expect Nintendo to make new IP next gen like they do every gen including the Switch, I hope they bring back some ignored franchises next gen. I'm less concerned with getting a big new franchise next gen than I am in seeing a brand new DK, Fzero, Star Fox, Kid Icarus, Punchout, etc.
