I think it's a mix of charisma and immigration. Like if you go back to the 2016 campaign, what really distinguished himself from the rest of the Republicans? Policy wise the only notable difference was on immigration specifically he talked about a wall while other Republicans took the traditional strong border policy stances. Yes he focused on blue caller white working class but all the other candidates wanted to bring manufacturing back to the US so policy wise he wasn't different here but he had way more charisma than any of the other candidates and unfortunately people actually trust the lying scumbag. Kinda like how Obama had a lot of charisma Trump is the GOP follow up to that. This charisma led to a lot of air time and his base trusted him so much that he's become immune to scandals.
