The left has only themselves to blame for this, their authoritarian attitude for the past decade provided the perfect conditions for the alt right to flourish.

The media. They normalized facism. Trump is not a normal candidate and we treated him like one. Most Trump supporters arent' facists they just don't know policy and are brainwashed. But the media treating him like a regular candidate normalized this.
