I'm surprised not more countries do this.

I mean, for Ukraine, this is among the best deals they can have right now: The soldiers get top-notch training (probably miles above than what Ukraine can afford to their new recruits) and come back fully equipped, in this case probably with:

  • FAMAS F1 rifles (they're getting replaced by the HK416)
  • MILAN, Eryx and/or AT4 CS Anti-Tank launchers (all in process of getting replaced)
  • VAB APC (getting replaced by the VBMR)
  • AMX-10RC as both IFV and armored recon (getting replaced by the ERBC)
  • CEASAR mobile artillery (already getting delivered in high numbers to Ukraine)
  • other small arms and lighter vehicles

All those equipment hadn't been mothballed for long either and are still very capable, so they won't need to be refurbished to get into running order again.

Since they're from Croatia, I expect those T84 to be the Croatian version T84A, the oldest version of Croatian T84s. Those are about T-72B/BV in terms of protection and firepower, but have a stronger engine so they should be faster and more agile. Unless it's still old Yugoslavian T84s, at which point they're just about T72A level with better armor and rangefinder.
