Could it simply be that free games tend to be of the less impressive variety, in terms of production value and how huge they are? Sometimes there will be huge AAA games that become free, but it's pretty rare.

Nope. For PSN it happens to highly rated games too, we have a great example for AAA in Hoizon Forbidden Wests trophy data for example, the numbers after the first 5 hours went down drastically and a hell of a lot less people stuck with it after that. Ender lillies went from over a 20% platinum rate to a 10%, it never managed to recover and the drop off rate is even worse in the early trophies. Like 70 for first boss (down from over 90) down to 20% for the second boss. There are many examples but that's the freshest on in my memory.

For me, I have it happen with games like that also, games that are sure to be up my ally that I discard and don't feel as invested to play on like with Ender Lillies, Horizon Forbidden West as a AAA example and plenty of others. And inversely I've stuck with games I paid for that were mediocre at best, Lies of P for example which was great til the last quarter and had it been free I'd probably have dropped it.
