A lot of academics fall into the trap of writing in an overly complex manner simply because they can. An excellent example of a science writer who is extremely well qualified but writes very cogently is Gould (on evolution). Compared to many in his field, his writing is like a shining beacon of intelligibility unfettered by useless and pointless conventions.
