If the point of reference is comparing it to hand-held released 1.5 years previous (which lack scale to get better component prices), then yeah, it´s OK to call it a bit dated. There´s just no reason not to compare it to new products releasing in the same year, if it wants to target lower performance niche, OK but no need to deflect from that. Now sure, that may be a relative advancement for Nintendo compared to the Switch, but still not an example of aiming for best price:performance to last a generation.

IMHO they would be better off keeping the screen for hand-held mode in 720p but having a system stronger in other ways, which can more adequately scale to 1080p. Seems likely that the large majority of games will be using upscaling to hit 1080p, so the logic for having a higher resolution for the hand-held screen seems dubious. That´s just going to make ports easier, rather than be in some uncanny valley where people expect widespread PS4 or even XS ports, but that ends up a tough job for devs.
