The fact that you use Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh as your "examples" of anime simply proves my point. Go watch Future Boy Conan and then come back and tell me that it is "just a bunch of crack-spawned demons from Japan". Or if you want a less significant time commitment, watch Grave of the Fireflies. These are works of virtue and significance, not kid's shows designed to sell a product.

There are way more animes he could watch then just those. Diamond Dust Drops for example.
