The way you had to hold the controller was awkward, but damn if the thing didn't look nice! I used to put it beside my Nes and Snes controllers and just look at the thing. Damn, I was such a dork.

Were there any games that let you control the camera, before Mario 64? If there were, I certainly don't recall them.

Very few, and none in such an elegant, easy-to-control manner.  One of the unsung revolutionary features on the N64 was its' inclusion of buttons dedicated to camera control (even if they were often used for non-camera functions).

OT: The N64 is probaby my favourite (non-current-gen) console.  I say 'non-current-gen' because I'm waiting for the next-gen to put perspective on this generation.

Added horsepower aside, the N64 had many, many games that are often regarded as completely revolutionary, and just plain awesome.

-Mario 64 revolutionized platforming (and 3D gaming itself)

-Zelda.  We could finaly live out those dreams of going on a grand, sword-slinging adventure in full 3D.  The fact that games in the same genre today often claim (falsely) that they are "better than Ocarina of Time" speaks volumes here.

-Goldeneye and Perfect Dark proved that consoles can be viable platforms for FPS games, and even preferrable in multiplayer situations.

-Star Fox 64.  This game is the reason why Rumble technology is standard and expected for all consoles currently.

It also had many, many games that were just amazing experiences in their own right:

-Super Smash Bros

-Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie

-Conker's Bad Fur Day

-Tetrisphere

-Wrestlemania 2000 (WRESTLER CREATOR FTW!!)

-Tetrisphere

-Mario Kart

-Diddy Kong Racing

-Donkey Kong 64

-Pokemon Stadium

-Pokemon Snap! (Yes, it's one of my faves on the system.  Sue me )

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?
