Final Fantasy X was released in the week ending July 21st 2001 in Japan ... ( 73 weeks after the PS2 launched ); at the time the PS2 had already sold over 5 Million Console's in Japan which is as much as any non-winning home console has sold in Japan in its life.

Mmm ,the PSP has already exceeded 5 million and in only two years .An it isnt exactly winning ,in fact Japan is its worst market specially software-wise .
And Saturn and the N64 made more than 5 million (altough not by much ) .
Are you sure you arent making numbers with your ass ??
One more thing ;Sony is a sensible shareholder of Square Enix .
I am not arguing your point ,its normal that if the Nintendo plattform wipes out the floor with the competition Squares games would appear on that one .Just that your numbers are wrong and you arent taking in count some things .FFIII and DQ Joker have managed 1 million each ,very good numbers but not in the big DS games league and not in the FF and DQ league ....I think Square will be careful not to put all its hardcore games in a plattform suited to non-games ....from where the "serious games " announced in GDC .
Well, FF3 was a remake and not high ranked in Japan. It sold 1 million copies though.
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker was just a spinn-of of the DQ franchise and wasn´t expected to sell 4 million copies. But it probably will reach the 2 million mark which is pretty good for a side story.
I expect Dragon Quest 9 to sell 4 million copies in Japan.
Back to topic: It´s true Square will just release a lot of titles on the PS3 if the console sells well enough.
And Sony will have a hard time to remain number one in Japan...
