It just has to reach a point where it's self learning. Then all bets are off.
Sure it'll be great when it can cure cancer ... but to get to that level we are likely going to do something stupid like let it self iterate, learn, "think" to whatever degree by itself. When it can do that, then well it may well rapidly become impossible to control.
