I don't think it'll be the death of consoles as there will still be a market for under the TV devices. But yeah if the subsidized model that requires exclusivity and mass market would die it'll be great.
PlayStation and Xbox should just make consoles representing their vision of the best place to play games on the TV. 

Yeah, the report of my death is highly exaggerated.  There just way to many people who do not want to deal with PC unless MS comes out with a stripped down Windows/Xbox OS that supports all video cards and does nothing but push those cards to produce the best performance they can handle.  I doubt MS goes this route but Valve has the right ideal, MS is in a position to actually make it happen if they go that route.
