Finished watching the 30+ hour Alan Wake 2 playthrough I have been watching, and I have many thoughts about the future of Remedy's shared universe:
-
Spoiler!
- It's rumored that they have 2 expansions planned for Alan Wake 2, just like Alan Wake 1 and Control each got 2 expansions. They have 2 very likely settings for those 2 expansions imo, one where you play as FBC Agent Estevez while she explores the FBC Lake House outpost overlooking Cauldron Lake, an event which is alluded to in the main game, the other expansion one where you play as Bright Falls Sherriff Tim Breaker in the Dark Place, learning more about him and Warlin Door, and their alluded to connections to Quantum Break's Jack Joyce and Martin Hatch (played by the same actor in the case of Jack/Tim, Tim having glimpses of other versions of himself as well as a red haired woman [presumably Quantum Break's Beth Wilder], name similarities and references [Tim(e) Breaker and Quantum Break, Warlin and Martin having the same number of letters in the first name and same ending syllable, Door being a synonym for Hatch], Hatch and Door both being able to move between realities at will, etc.).More teases that Warlin Door is Saga's father are likely as well, if not a straight out confirmation.
- Aside from those 2 likely expansions, we have the Alan Wake sequel implications. Alan and Alice now trapped in the Dark Place again, but this time with the knowledge that the loops of the Dark Place are actually a spiral, meaning it is possible to ascend back up the spiral and escape, with the right tools. Tor and Odin Anderson went into the Dark Place as well, to save the trapped Saga Anderson, but she managed to escape with the help of Alan sacrificing himself to save her without her ever seeing them in the dark place, meaning that they will be in the Dark Place with Alan and Alice in the 3rd game, particularly interesting given their unique powers (including Tor straight up calling down lightning like his namesake during Alan Wake 2) and their own history with the Dark Place (the Dark Place took Odin's eye decades earlier).
- We have many implications for Control 2 and/or the upcoming Control co-op game. Now that Saga and Alex have escaped the Darkness, considering their skillset and knowledge of the paranatural and reading of classified Federal Bureau of Control Documents during Alan Wake 2, it is unlikely that the FBC will allow them to rejoin the FBI, instead I foresee them recruiting Saga and Alex into the FBC. Meanwhile we learned that Alan's literary agent Barry Wheeler from Alan Wake 1 has went to a wellness retreat ran by the Blessed Paracriminal Cultist group which is known to the FBC, so it seems likely that Barry will appear in a future Control game. We also know from Documents in Control that the Blessed Group had the ActionMaxx Camera Altered Item from Control's 1st DLC in their possession back in the 1960's (when Thomas Zane was active and eventually went missing in the Dark Place in 1970), and that the Blessed Pictures altered camera was seemingly used to film the Thomas Zane movies that Alan Wake saw while in the Dark Place during Alan Wake 2. That camera has the unique ability to distort reality for those in the vicinity of the camera when it is in use, which seems to explain why Thomas Zane, a poet, is remember as a filmmaker by most people (Jesse Faden realizes during Control that she is one of the few people who remembers Thomas Zane as a Poet instead of as a Filmmaker),because being present for the filming of a Blessed Pictures movie with the Camera literally distorted reality, changing Zane from a poet into a filmmaker.
- Then we have the mystery of Ahti. Like Martin Hatch/Warlin Door, he seems to be able to shift between realities and exist in more than one place at once, as we now know that he is in the Dark Place as a Janitor who cleans Warlin Door's tv studio, a resident of the Anderson Nursing home in Bright Falls who believes himself to be the janitor of the Nursing Home even though he is a resident, and the Janitor at the FBC's Oldest House, all at the same time, and that each of the Ahti's seem to have knowledge of the things the other Ahti's have seen. Ahti also knew Thomas Zane and calls Alan Thomas since the two of them look so much alike. Such an interesting character in the universe and I can't wait to learn more about him.
- We also have the mystery of the missing Old Gods of Asgard bandmate. Odin and Tor are still alive of course, now trapped in the Dark Place as of the end of Alan Wake 2, while Balder died of cancer in 1980, but the 4th bandmate, Loki Darkens, the original lead guitarist of the band, is said to have gone missing shortly after the band's 2nd Album released in 1972, just 2 years after Thomas Zane disappeared. His disappearance, combined with his last name containing the word Dark, seems suspicious for sure.
Man I love Remedy's universe so much. Sam Lake is a genius of writing.
