TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine seems worth listing just narrowly behind Genesis. It still had a few important games and the obvious impressive shmups. Very impressive system. Just launched late outside of Japan.

After that 3DO was the very technically impressive, but very expensive system.
There were a few games that started on 3DO that didn’t port as well to Playstation as you would expect while they got to grips with it during the first year.

Saturn I have no idea where to rank, but lighting effects in smaller play spaces could seem way beyond what the other consoles could do.

PC Engine behind the Genesis???

The Coregrafx had a much higher color count on screen (482 out of a palette of 512, beating even the SNES 256 colors while the Megadrive/Genesis only got a paltry 61), much higher resolution (565x242 vs 320x240), and the upgraded Supergrafx added on top of that a second layer or plane of scolling, which the Megadrive/Genesis misses.

They had 8-bit processors, but their hardware was more capable than the 16-bit of the Genesis, disproving that more bits = better since before 16-bit consoles even existed.

No PC engine had games at those color depths or resolutions meanwhile the Genesis actually had games run at 320x448, pc engine had only 64 sprites at the largest 16x16

and the supergrafx was a different console, might as well consider the sega cd as part of the genesis
