There's definitely an upwards trend even when adjusted for inflation since the GBC, and it shot up quite a bit with both the DS and 3DS, less so with the Switch.

Due to inflation, $399 is practically the floor now, as by end of next year the Switch launch price adjusted to inflation will only be marginally lower than that price. In other words, a price of $399 to $449 seems to be the most probable range of price.
