Agreed that both are totally different games within the RPG genre, Starfield is of course a shooter-RPG hybrid, while Baldur's Gate 3 is an old-school style CRPG with D20 mechanics, D20 being something that I don't think any AAA RPG has done since Obsidian's KOTOR 2 in 2004. My only reason for comparing them was in discussing which will win the most RPG of the Year awards from gaming publications and award shows later this year. Does it matter in the end really which wins? Not to sales, Starfield and BG3 are both going to sell very well, BG3 already is selling well (4th biggest singleplayer launch of all-time on Steam) while Starfield will surely sell 20m+ lifetime with probably at least 2x that many players thanks to Gamepass.

I mention the comparison only for 1 main reason: I had personally hoped to see Bethesda reclaim their crown as the undisputed King of RPG's that they had lost back in 2015 when Fallout 4 got beat by Witcher 3. Again, not saying it matters much in the long run, even if they're not able to reclaim their lost crown they will still be one of the top dogs in the RPG genre in terms of game quality, and likely still the top dog in terms of sales/players. I just think it would have been nice to see them reclaim their crown is all. But props to Larian if they did indeed make the better RPG, can't wait to play both personally.

No objections to your comparisons but some others are so obviously wrapped up in console wars, Lol.

-snip-

Yeah, Starfield vs Baldur's Gate 3 definitely got turned into a console war thing which is a real shame. Basically the timeline of discourse followed this path:

  • 2020- Rumors that Starfield would be PS5 exclusive, and the Sony ponies rejoiced at the news, while the Xbots lamented Xbox's lack of trying to lock down timed hats of their own to counter Sony's multiple timed hats by that point.
  • 2021- Xbox acquires Zenimax, and then the discourse changed to Sony ponies coping, saying there is no way that Xbox will decide to skip a PS5 release on Starfield and hurt the game's revenue, while the Xbots bragged about how Starfield would be exclusive to Xbox and how if PS fans wanted to play it they'd just have to break down and buy a Series S.
  • 2022- Xbox has confirmed that Starfield will be exclusive. Sony Ponies start coping by saying that Starfield won't be a good game because Fallout 4 was weaker than Bethesda's past games while Fallout 76 was a hot mess. Meanwhile the Xbots continue to brag about Starfield being an exclusive. (notice how I have yet to mention Baldur's Gate 3)
  • Early 2023- Baldur's Gate 3, which up until this point was a fairly niche PC focused RPG that most console gamers had never even heard of, is suddenly thrust into the console war limelight when Baldur's Gate 3 is announced for PS5 back in February, with no Xbox announce released. Xbots immediately flood social media to attack Larian for selling out and giving Sony a timed hat deal even though most console WRPG fans are on Xbox because of Bethesda, Obsidian, and inXile being Xbox first party. Larian confirms the game is coming to Xbox with no timed hat deal with Sony being in place, and places the blame for the late Xbox release on Series S, which only further fuels the console war. Xbots begin attacking Larian for being an incompetent developer on the technical side of game making, listing off more demanding games that run well on Series S, meanwhile the Sony Ponies begin to attack Series S using Baldur's Gate 3 as an example of why Series S is a horrible console that is holding back gaming.
  • Now- Baldur's Gate 3 releases to extremely high levels of critical acclaim, while Starfield is a month from release. Sony Ponies are again coping now saying that they never wanted Starfield on PS5 and Baldur's Gate 3 is all they need, and calling BG3 a PS5 exclusive (even though it's releasing on PS5 almost a month later than PC). Meanwhile Xbots continue to attack Larian and accuse them of being in bed with Sony and purposefully trying to damage Xbox's reputation with their statements about Series S, citing Baldur's Gate 3 being able to run on Steam Deck (without splitscreen) as reasoning for why Series S should be able to run Baldur's Gate 3 (with splitscreen).

Long story short, the console wars are so stupid sometimes.
