There are fundamental reasons why you don't want optical discs in a handheld.

1) Power consumption.
2) Noise.
3) Reliability.
4) Speed.
5) Space.

I am not asserting that the type of media is what constitutes a devices form factor, but certain types of media are better fits for certain form factors.
I.E. Carts in a handheld.

These reasons are the same ones why you don't want optical discs in a home console. Optical discs are inferior regardless of the form factor.

False.

1) Power consumption in a home fixed console is irrelevant for the optical drive. They don't rely on a battery.
2) Noise in a home fixed console is irrelevant as they implement noise and vibration dampening.
3) The Optical disc drive will be fixed and not moving around, removing the skipping issues, increasing reliability.
4) Fixed home consoles can operate their drives at a higher speed due to vibration dampening and power available.
5) Space is not at a premium in a home console like a Handheld.

Hence why home fixed consoles for the last several decades have used optical disks... Yet Nintendo has stuck to Carts since the start for all it's handhelds for the last 30+ years.

Plus optical disks are cheaper.

A large issue why the Wii U failed was poor messaging. - Another factor was cost.

Then the games came out in a trickle... Despite being some of the best games of all time. (Mario Kart 8, Smash, Breath of the Wild etc')

If Nintendo can avoid any sillyness with naming or messaging, their next console will do fantastic... It's an issue that Microsoft keeps finding itself in.

Xbox Original > Xbox 360 > Xbox One > One S/X and then Series S/X. Extremely convoluted naming with what should be the Xbox 4 and 4 Pro.

With them only supporting one platform now and their employee count increasing droughts should be avoided going forward thankfully. For the Xbox part I actually think they should've called the current Xbox the Xbox 5. They'd skip a number to match Playstation and since the previous ones weren't properly numbered it'd work out well.

I actually enjoyed the WiiU, it was a fun device. But it was hard to argue that the 3DS was the better platform from Nintendo during that era...

Or... Xbox > Xbox 360 > Xbox 720 > Xbox 1080. :P
