You know, I have been thinking about it and I feel despite the concerns about turn based, these games still contain an element of turn based combat. Let me elaborate. Every Eikon move has a cooldown. You can't use the move again indefinitely. Different moves have different cooldowns, with an Eikon's ultimate attack freezing active time and having the longest cooldown.

The main different these newer games feature is the ability to move, attack and dodge between the cooldown period. Understanding how to approach the enemy without incuring damage is the primary focus of the combat. You can't just go in there and spam the same move over and over again. Its almost as if you have to wait your turn before you can use the move again.

That being said, I haven't even got the Titan Eikon abilities yet, and I feel that I need to practice before I get good at the combat. It is difficult to master, unlike God of War which I felt was a lot easier to get good at.

When you think about it, cooldowns might not be turns but are still an ATB element, only in reverse.

I wonder if some people would feel like 16 'betrayed its roots' less if the Eikon powers' bar counted up instead of down. Or be more critical of FF7R or FF12 if they reverted their action bars to become like cooldowns. A lot of it is just psychological.

Honestly not sure how I feel about the game yet. Its not a betrayal by any means. You could give this game 9/10, but because it has the Final Fantasy name all sort of expectations become attached to it. Clive and Jill really make this game shine.

If it wasn't for FF7 Remake I may well have fallen in love with this game... But FF7 Remake showed me the definitive FF experience with a battle system that incoporated turn based systems with active gameplay.
