Who said they have to kill him off screen.  It could be the opening of the game where you try to prevent the Halo from blowing up. Or you can just put the game 100 years from Masterchief and there is a nice memorial.  The thing is, if you are going to go all new, you kill the old and start fresh.  You take the core mechanics that made the game a success but flip everything else.  Hell, I would be good with a Masterchief AI, which would be fine for the People that need something of the MC in the game.

Nah...

if Chief dies...WHEN Chief dies...he's gotta go out at the end of a full game, like a boss. Not at the start of a game, like you bait and switching players, and failing epically at that in a death that leads to everyone getting killed off. Like, you think you've seen Halo fans pissed off? Lmao, you would get some truly spectacular levels of shitstorm if you pulled that kinda stunt.

Personally I do not care how he dies, I even do not care if he dies but what I do believe is that for any creative team to be successful, they must be able to carve out their own story.  Doing the same thing that no longer captures an audience is a sure way to fail.

As for the fans, well fans are always pissed off.  That is all I ever see is some fan throwing shade bascially at everything that does not conform to their vision for a game.  Hell if it makes everyone happy just spin it off to something else in the universe call it something different and move on if that helps with fan outrage.  At the end of the day, I find that a creative team needs to make a product they believe in and have the expertise to accomplish then worrying about fans bitching all the time.  The first step is to make a damn good product.
