I was a bit worried when I first played a Persona game back in 2011 (Persona 1 Portable was my first experience) and SMT first time back in 2017 (SMTIV was my first SMT game) - after playing through them for a few hours, I understood the mechanics and gameplay.
Now both series are two of my most favorite RPG series - next to Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts of course.
You should try it out - the games these days like Spade mentioned have a lot of options to make it a smooth and easy experience - moreso than in the past versions.
