| Lavamelon said: I love the Switch, but I doubt it will sell much more from here onwards. I recall Nintendo a few weeks ago mentioned that they predict the Switch to sell less than 15 million units by next fiscal year? If that’s the case Nintendo will decline if they don’t release Switch 2 soon. |
15 million isn't bad especially when their evergreen titles are still selling for mostly full price, along with any new titles that are released. I agree with whoever said they don't have much of a reason to come out with a new system, but that's only if their software sales are still doing well. Unfortunately I'm not sure how to check their software numbers this year but I know ToTK is doing some crazy numbers at least.
I would love a new Nintendo system in the next year or two but it makes sense to me (not a businessman, btw, so I wouldn't be surprised if I'm dead wrong) to milk their successful system as long as they can. I'd think the fear of having another Wii U type disaster would make them want to continue making games for the 125 million+ Switch owners to sell their games to until they see a clear decline.
That being said, the Wii ended with a whimper which could have contributed to the failure of their next console, but I mostly blame that on the Wii U's lack of a clear, easily marketable, and fun hook. The fact that many Wii gamers were only interested in "casual" games also didn't help, since many of its users were able to get their casual gaming fix from their phones. That audience was gone by the time the Wii U came around.
The Switch seems different to me, evidenced by the sales of basically every game series on the system setting sales records for their respective series' on it. This audience seems more sustainable and more likely to want the next system to play the next iterations of the games they liked on the Switch.
Anyway, sorry if this post was a little rambly, I'm sleepy.
TL;DR - I don't expect Nintendo's next console until 2025 at the earliest, but most likely will be even later. I expect it to be another success but not as successful as the Switch if it's just a Super Switch. They'd need some other gimmick and wildly hyped up/revered launch title like BoTW for that.
