| Farsala said: I suppose I overestimated Valve's value since they made a console. They definitely couldn't afford ABK. But otherwise I think their studios have not been shuttered, and their games haven't been complete flops like some of MS game studios. All Google/ Amazon would need to do is support game development/innovation and clean up the corporate culture. Otherwise they wouldn't need to have a big hand in the day to day operations. |
Steam Deck's barely a blip compared to the main big 3 consoles.
I'm not gonna get into whether or not if they can afford ABK because I dont follow financials for any company.
But to say Valve's games or game development havent been flops is hilarious.
Aside from Counter-Strike, Portal, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress and Half-Life which had all their peaks during the 2000s and early 2010s - Valve's track record when it comes to game development is as shoddy as Amazon or Google's
Artifact was a total failure to the point where further development was ceased in 2021.
Prior to that they had DOTA2 which has been overshadowed by LoL and isnt as big as it used to be in the 2010s due to the rise in popularity to other MP games that came out in recent years.
Their last wide spread release of a game success was Counter-Strike GO and that was back in 2012.
Half-Life Alyx is their latest game release but its stuck to VR and due to that its not as popular as the games they made in the past.
All they've been doing lately is making tech demos and re-releases like Portal Companion collection.
Game development is not their main focus anymore - its providing a great service (Steam) and creating expansions to that service (SteamVR, Steam Deck, SteamOS/Linux support, etc) and due to that, neither Nintendo, MS, Sony, or EGS/EA/Ubisoft/etc comes close to providing as good of a service.
Google and Amazon did what you mention and it didnt provide them any success which is why we are seeing stuff like this: https://blog.google/products/stadia/message-on-stadia-streaming-strategy/
Like how can you say Google when stuff like this happens
"Google did not respond to multiple requests for comment about how it plans to compensate developers or handle obsolete releases. The company instead directed WIRED to blog posts released at the time of the announcement addressing customer concerns. Many developers are still in the dark as they wait to hear from the company directly. Developers behind titles that were once Stadia exclusives, like PixelJunk Raiders, are now searching for new publishers to keep their games from total extinction. Tequila Works, another developer with a once exclusive title, announced just this week it would bring its game Gylt to other platforms."

"Otherwise they wouldnt need a big hand in day to day operations"
Oh dont worry, they got you covered on that already.
