That's fine, Microsoft is big lately on supporting everything, including rivals, they even had that big "Microsoft <3 Linux" push, Lol. They've made efforts to support Linux quite a bit lately. Nobody uses Windows Store for Gaming anyway (I'm exaggerating but c'mon, they're 7th) and Linux will never become mainstream enough to take over Windows (the casual users are way bigger than the gaming market) plus Steam OS is exclusively for their handheld devices (which is built from Linux). Lately it has felt like Windows has became a bit of an afterthought for Microsoft as well, they very clearly don't care about it anywhere near as much as the used to, it's way past the days of being a cornerstone of Microsoft's business, in fact, Microsoft literally removed describing Windows as a "cornerstone" of its business in its 10-K report, Lol. Profits are probably way down due to the constantly giving it away for free, Cloud and Azure are way past it and eventually Xbox will as well (very soon if ABK passes) and while you can argue that Windows is a gateway to stuff like Azure/Office which are the money makers, I refer to what I said above, Linux will never overtake Windows as the mainstream OS and it's businesses who are the main buyers of Azure/Office, they sure as shit aren't leaving Windows for Linux, Lol. As for the "Gaming" aspect, Windows is a Gaming OS as far as "people use Windows because it's default then go download Steam" Lol. If SteamOS takes off in a large way, they absolutely should double down on support for it and try to get a native Game Pass on it, it's worth sacrificing the tiny gaming userbase who actually use Windows Store. |
I disagree, one thing MS has not changed is on competition especially with windows. While they are ok putting games on Steam, they have not lost sight that Steam has its own OS and uses competing Vulcan against DX. There is the potential if Vulcan and Steam OS to gain enough traction that MS could see gamers just install Steam OS on PC and Laptops without windows which would cut very deeply into their pockets.
MS only supports Linux just like they support anything if they can control it. MS making their own version is still them supporting their eco system because they control that version and anyone using it. What MS does not control is Steam OS or Vulcan and the combination of those 2 technologies if they gain enough traction would eat into windows sells and that is something MS definitely would not like.
I would say never say never. Being complacent is exactly how you find yourself on the losing end. Personally I would say what MS should do is create a gamers only Windows, which is basically like what they run for the Xbox but instead for the PC. Pretty much stripped down to run games full blast without all the overhead of a full windows install. Get ahead of steam and make Valve run that version and give up their own OS but then again that is how I would do it. MS definitely have the engineers to make this very successful especially if the performance benefits can be obtained.
