Well something you have to consider in these scenarios is the technical limitations of the older games. And if it was ever something that the developer wanted you to see. Since there were fixed camera angles in FF7 and RE3, I think the answer is mainly no, because the player could not point the camera in that direction even if they tried. In RE4 it was technically possible, but I believe Ashley covers up and calls you a pervert the moment you try. |
No no, in FFVII, there's literally a CG scene on the airship where Tifa falls back and you see her panties. So it's not a technical limitation of old moreso than it is a modern avoidance of dealing with SJW attacks, etc. on sexualization.
And same thing with Ashley: there are literal crawling (or I think falling?) scenes where you straight up just see her panties. They could have easily shifted the camera or done other things to avoid it. I think they just felt more free with a little "sex sells" in the old days even though that's actually still true, now. The difference now is that everyone has a "voice" and a "platform", so even though there's no such thing as bad marketing, there is such a thing as creating growing population of dissidents against the "game industry" for sexualizing women.
To be clear, something that's been made very obvious thoughout my years: I'm not actually asking to sexualize female characters. I'm actually asking to maintain it where it was used because for some of us, yes: it was funny to hear Ashley say, "hey, what are you looking at?!" and cover up her panties lol... Like damn, the game just called me out in a comical way ![]()
Another example is how Genshin already has subtley caved into China's standards and has desexualized characters and future designs. They released some alternate skins, for example, that are REQUIRED to be used when the game is played in China that remove cleavage/buttcheek creases and other things. I'm actually against that: if they made a character sexy, then leave it be. Not all characters have to be that way, but for the ones that are, let it.
