It breaks out of the traditional fighter mold of one vs one with health bars and complicated combos in an arena with little effect on the battle. Instead you get a 4-way fight where you try to knock out your enemies more than they knock you out, arena hazards which have to be avoided (or utilized, heheheh), and items which add a lot of depth and upredictability to the game.
