There's talk in this thread about what was the primary motive behind the attack on Paul Pelosi; mental illness or political extremism. I would argue that which contributed more matters very little when they both go hand in hand so often:

Mentally ill people exist around the world but the overwhelming majority of political violence is committed by and for the right wing. This is no accident when the conservative media apparatus is so comfortable with violent rhetoric and the movement so comfortable with authoritarianism.
