How are programmers getting screwed here? Do their paychecks that they've been paid disappear suddenly? Nintendo is the one who gets the profits as IP holder and publisher, not Platinum. The most the programmers will lose out on if the sales are bad would be bonuses, but often bonuses for programmers are tied to reviews not necessarily just sales.

Imagine you work on something for 5 years and then it flops and all the work was for nothing even if you did get your money.

Even ignoring that, if the game flops they will loose out on making Bayonetta 4.
