Take Two's publishing label Private Division has announced it is working with Wētā Workshop, the production company that created the special effects in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, on a new game "set in the Middle-earth universe of J.R.R Tolkien." The game, which will be based upon the "literary works of the series", is currently in early development, and is expected to launch during Take Two's fiscal year 2024, although a specific release date has understandably not been announced.
>> Two thoughts: it's in early development but will launch in less than 3 years? It doesn't look like an AAA game (not that this is bad, of course). Also, does Weta have any experience in game development?

Not sure, but Unity did acquire them recently. Perhaps this game will run on the engine and Weta will provide some of their vfx tools and expertise to the project.
