It was sadly confirmed earlier today that the legendary Bill Russell, one of the pioneers of today's game and one of the greatest players of all time, has passed away at the age of 88.
11x NBA Champion including 2 as a player/coach and 8 in a row - something that will never be duplicated.
5x League MVP
And one of the greatest defenders the league has ever seen.
But his accolades on the court PALE in comparison to his impact off of it. His non[stop battle and advocacy for Civil Rights, Equality, and Social Justice, especially during the height of the 60s and the Civil Rights Movement. Dealing with racism everywhere he went during his playing days, even in the very city he played for. Yet he rose above it all to become not only one of the greatest players ever but one of the most important figures in that struggle.
The world is better for having had him in it and he will be dearly missed.
R.I.P. Bill
